John Pratt Named Trainer of the Month for January 2018
John came to TMC in 2016, and even though he has only been with the company a short time, he has been in the trucking industry for most of his life. “I took after my dad and learned from him,” John says. “He raised me to help out and to do whatever it takes to make life easier for others out here doing the job.”
This is where John’s motivation to train comes from. “It’s all about helping the new guys and training them to be successful,” he says. “Seeing them succeed tells me that I did my job right.”
John encourages his trainees to trust their own judgement when they are out on the road. “Always give it your best and communicate if you have any problems,” he says. “Protecting yourself and those around you is the most important job you have.”
In matters of his training style, John takes a laid-back approach. “I can’t stand a dirty window; I’m strict on that,” he jokes. “Otherwise, I try not to be too hard on my guys and really focus on securement and making sure they know how to do things.” John also tells his trainees that he is available 24/7 if they ever need anything. “I’ll take a phone call for my guys anytime I can and do my best to help them.”
“The drivers that John has trained all have an excellent safety record, which is a testament to his focus on training them to do the job right,” says Jeff Geist, Training Coordinator Manager. “He tells them to picture their family in the vehicle that is next to them out on the road.”
John makes his training a team effort, and reminds his trainees that teamwork really does make the dream work. “I’m on such a great team here, and the whole TMC family has been great to me,” he says. “I have a home here, and I’m not going anywhere.”

Driver trainers are vital to the TMC training department, and each month a trainer is chosen who demonstrates the outstanding qualities TMC looks for in a trainer. The Trainer of the Month recipient is chosen based on their safety record and the safety performance of their trainees, the number of drivers trained and the retention percentage of those drivers. Congratulations to our January 2018 Trainer of the Month, John Pratt!
