Matthew D. Hodges Named February 2017 Trainer of the Month
Matt started at TMC in June 2014 as an experienced over-the-road truck driver, and began taking on the task of training new drivers shortly after. Prior to coming to TMC, Matt had taken a break from driving to be a police officer for a few years, and it was when he came back to trucking that he joined the Black and Chrome. Having so much leadership experience allowed him to move into a training position quickly. “I’ve always just liked to teach people,” Matt says.
“It sounds corny, but I like when I get to see my trainees being successful down the road,” he says. “It gives me a sense of pride knowing that I helped them get started.” To add to that, Matt also likes to see drivers transform from new workers to more seasoned workers that are sure of themselves and the job they’re doing.
“Matt is focused on developing drivers to be safe and successful,” says Jeff Geist, Training Coordinator Manager. “He says being patient is important and he does not overreact when [his trainees] make mistakes.”
Matt says his training style changes with each driver. “Everyone learns in different ways and at different paces,” he explains. “I always make sure I’m working right there with them.”
Most importantly, Matt likes to invest his time in helping drivers succeed, because he has held positons where there was no one there to help him do just that. “TMC is hands-down a great place to be,” he says. “I have great relationships with everyone I work with, and I’m treated as a person; not just a truck number.”

Driver trainers are vital to the TMC training department, and each month a trainer is chosen who demonstrates the outstanding qualities TMC looks for in a trainer. The Trainer of the Month recipient is chosen based on their safety record and the safety performance of their trainees, the number of drivers trained and the retention percentage of those drivers. Congratulations to our February 2017 Trainer of the Month, Matthew D. Hodges!
