TMC's CDL Training Program Celebrates One Year Anniversary

on Wednesday, June 08, 2016 in Company News

June 8th, 2016 marks a special date in TMC history – it’s the official one-year anniversary of the TMC CDL training program. This program, available to select candidates that want to drive for TMC but do not already have a Class A CDL, provides the training to help them obtain the CDL in exchange for one year of employment driving for TMC.

Already in the first year, the program is off to a great start with some exciting changes. We have just completed construction on a brand-new classroom for the students, giving them more space to learn and a great view of the yard. We also now have three full-time instructors dedicated to the program: Mike Harris and Anthony Holtz who are both classroom and yard instructors, and John Helmkamp, pre-trip and yard instructor. Soon, to allow candidates more flexibility with start dates, we will be starting new classes every week, rather than every two weeks.

How did the program get started?

TMC has been committed to training recent graduates of truck driving schools since 1993 and has maintained strong relationships with the schools. However, there were certain states within our hiring areas that we had particularly high needs for drivers that the local schools were unable to meet in the current industry driver shortage. We decided to offer our own CDL training program for the purpose of finding more drivers in these high needs areas in addition to hiring candidates from the CDL schools we have relationships with. For more details on specific states we’re looking for candidates, please visit our New to Trucking page.

We still continue to hire recent graduates of CDL schools, as well as truck drivers that already have experience. All experience levels are welcome to join Team TMC, as long as they meet the qualifications.

How does the program work?

Candidates are invited to the TMC Training Center in Des Moines, IA where they attend a three-week program designed to help them learn the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain the Class A CDL. They receive instructions on pre-trip inspections, backing, and get plenty of behind-the-wheel drive time with our driving instructors. In addition to the training to obtain the license, they also go through TMC employee orientation and hands-on load securement training. After they complete the program and get their Class A CDL, they go out on the road with an experienced TMC driver trainer for five weeks to learn the lifestyle and how to make great money!

The classroom is located at TMC's state-of-the-art training facility in Des Moines, Iowa.
