Running for a Cause - Employee Spotlight
Jeff Floyd says he’s never been one to mix his personal life with work, so we likely would have never found out about his upcoming run for charity. When his brother Jason private messaged us on Facebook with the details on his plans, we couldn’t resist looking into the story further. Read on to find out more about Jeff and the cause.
On October 4th and 5th, Jeff Floyd will be running the Crawlin’ Crab 5k and Half Marathon in Hampton, VA to help raise money for the Roc Solid Foundation, a charitable organization for pediatric cancer patients. While this will be Jeff’s 3rd half marathon overall, this will be his first one where he’s running for a charity.
Jeff started his career with TMC back in 1994 as a driver. He drove for us for many years before joining the recruiting department as a field recruiter in 2005. In 2008 he moved to our sales division as Vice President of Sales in the South, and he said it was right around this time that he started to gain weight. Determined to lose weight, he challenged himself to run a half marathon.
According to Jeff, “I went and did a half marathon with no training at all and it almost killed me. I was in pain, it was the worst thing I’d ever done. But in all my life I’ve yet to encounter anything that’s beaten me, and I wanted to give it another shot.” He started training for his next half marathon and was able to shave an impressive one hour off his previous time and lost 30 pounds.
After that he felt like he hated running and never wanted to run again, but thought he’d still be willing to run if he could raise money for a good cause. He signed up for the Crawlin’ Crab 5k and Half Marathon with the goal of raising money for a charity of his choice. Jeff chose the Roc Solid Foundation because his mother and grandmother both died of cancer and he wanted to do something cancer-related that benefited kids. What he likes about Roc Solid in particular is that you can really see the end result. The charity is most known for picking up the kids in a limo and taking them to go out shopping, then surprising them with a brand new playground set when they get back.
Originally, Jeff was hoping he could just get each of his friends to kick in a dollar. Already, he’s received generous donations and has raised $425 as of July 9th. If you’re interested in contributing to the cause, you may do so here. Jeff will be running the October 4th-5th races in honor of his mother. He is pictured below with his daughter, Jade, who will be running the 5k with him on October 4th.
