Springtime Hazards

on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 in Life on the Road

Spring is almost here, which means that Frost Laws in the northern states and Canada are coming into play. The states of Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces have frost law restrictions during the spring.

These laws greatly reduce the weight allowances for legal and permitted shipments over 80,000lbs gross weight. In some cases, it can take 9 or 10 axles to move a commodity that would normally be moved on 6 axles. These frost laws normally begin in March and could remain in effect until as late as June. Drivers need to be aware of these frost laws, so they ensure the load arrives safely. Watch for road sign postings and be aware of the states that have restrictions.
