In 2014, the George W. Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative and the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program joined forces to discuss veteran and transitioning service member employment in United States. The topic of concern was, while improving, the unemployment rate for certain sectors of veterans remains higher than the national average. During this forum, military leaders, government representatives and business leaders gathered and began to map the transition process and employment pathways for transitioning soldiers and their spouses.

Last week, this group met once again in Washington D.C. at a summit co-sponsored by the Bush Institute and the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring our Heroes program to celebrate and share what has been accomplished as a result of this initiative.

TMC Transportation was honored to be one of the 40 plus companies invited to participate in this event and be recognized for its efforts to employ military veterans. The agenda included presentations by President George W. Bush, Former First Lady Laura Bush, US Department of Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. Dakota Meyer and Hiring Our Heroes President Eric Eversole, among others. Topics of discussion included the struggle faced by veterans with post-traumatic stress, overcoming barriers to hiring and retaining veterans, finding the right job, transition roadmaps and why military spouse careers are critical for today’s military.

TMC’s Vice President of Driver Recruiting, Duane Boswell, attended the summit and had the opportunity to meet with Hiring Our Heroes executives as well as military leaders. “Networking with other companies and learning about their military hiring initiatives was invaluable,” he says. “Participating in events like this keeps TMC on the leading edge of military veteran hiring initiatives and puts us in a stronger position to benefit from this valuable source of potential employees.”
