DOQWithin the trucking industry, it is not uncommon to see a lot of turnover among truck drivers. James Underwood has proven that is not always the case as he approaches his 22nd year hauling flatbed freight with TMC Transportation. Underwood has recently been awarded Driver of the 2nd Quarter for 2022.

Over the last two decades with TMC, Underwood has gained a great amount of experience. Underwood started in the linehaul division where he also trained future drivers. Eventually, he moved to a dedicated account “I enjoyed being a trainer. It was nice to learn about fellow drivers and I found it enjoyable to teach other people how to have success in this industry.”

Underwood originally was drawn to TMC all those years ago because the clean black and chrome trucks stood out to him. “I like the physical activity I get from driving a flatbed, as well as the top-of-the-line equipment TMC has to offer." Underwood explained that being from TMC is constantly a conversation starter. “When talking to customers people respect us and when talking to other drivers, they always bring up how nice our trucks and equipment are.”

When asked about being named Driver of the Quarter, Underwood had this to say, “I was excited. I was happy to hear that. I have worked hard so the recognition is nice.”

“James Underwood is one of our hardest-running drivers. He does whatever we ask of him without complaint. If we have any questions, we always know that we can go to James, and he will have the answer for us. Twenty-two years is a long time and James has done great every moment of those 22 years,” says James Crawford, Underwood’s Fleet Manager.

Once a driver has been awarded Driver of the Quarter, they remain eligible for the rest of their tenure to be selected for the highest honor at TMC, which is to become a Wheel Master. This is an award given to the most deserving driver based on safety and how they represent TMC. Underwood is now eligible to become a Wheel Master in the future “That is why I do things the way I do them. I try and be the best and just worry about things I can control,” says Underwood.

Congratulations to James Underwood!
