How to Get Your Commercial Learner's Permit

If you want to get your CDL with TMC, you’ll need to have one essential tool to get started: your commercial learner’s permit (CLP).

What Is a CLP?

Your commercial learner’s permit allows you to drive in the presence of someone who holds a commercial driver’s license. This means that you can practice the hands-on skills of truck driving before you have your commercial driver’s license.

You’ll need to have your CLP before you start TMC’s CDL training program

Requirements for Getting Your CLP

In order to get your CLP, you will need to:

  • Meet the age requirements. You need to be over age 18 if you only want to drive within a state, or over age 21 if you want to drive between states. Please note that TMC requires drivers to be at least 23 years of age.
  • Have a valid regular driver’s license in your state of residency.
  • Gather the documentation that your state requires. Check with your local agency to confirm.
  • Take a physical administered by a medical provider certified to conduct DOT physicals. Find a DOT-certified medical provider near you.
  • Pass your permit exam(s)—one or more written tests, administered at a licensing facility in your state. The tests you need to take should cover General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combinations. Some states may require additional tests; check with your licensing agency to confirm.

Studying for Your CLP

Make sure you give yourself enough time to study for your CLP test—most people need at least two weeks.

We recommend studying your state’s CDL manual. While most states’ manuals are similar, there may be some differences.  You will need to study sections 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the manual. If you are getting your permit in Texas, you will also need to study section 14.

Many states provide practice tests so you can make sure you’re ready for the permit exam. We recommend taking advantage of these resources to prepare yourself for the exam.

Retesting

Keep in mind that if you don’t pass the permit test on your first try, you can retest. Rules about when you can retest vary from state to state, so check with your licensing agency. Make sure you allow yourself time to retest if needed.

Next Steps

Once you pass the test, have a temporary copy of your permit, and have been approved to drive for TMC, reach out to your recruiter to get scheduled for training! You will need to provide a copy of your permit via email.
