Meet November 2017's Trainer of the Month - Travis Cody!

Travis started driving for TMC in June of 2012. Similar to some of his cohorts, he waited to get some experience under his belt before taking on the role of training. “It was a very appealing opportunity for me,” says Travis. “It was a chance to advance in my career while also feeling like I was giving back to the company.”

Travis is now in his third year of training. Over this time, he has learned the importance of being patient with his trainees. “For anyone who wants to be a trainer, patience is a big thing,” he says. “Some will pick up things faster than others. It’s a matter of adapting your teaching to each individual.” This mindset is the approach Travis uses with all of his trainees.

“I’m more of a hands-on trainer, but I also try to keep it laid back,” says Travis. “Trainees are already nervous about starting the job as it is, so I try not to give them added pressure.”

Along with helping TMC's new drivers, Travis enjoys the social aspect of being a trainer. “It’s been great getting to meet different people who come into the company... not just new drivers, but also those who work in the training yards and offices,” he tells us. Building relationships with other employees and seeing how they do their jobs has helped Travis make sure that his trainees receive consistent messages across the board in the company.

Travis is appreciative of the recognition. “I do my best to make sure the company is putting good drivers on the road,” he says.

Driver trainers are vital to the TMC Training Department, and each month a trainer is chosen who demonstrates the outstanding qualities TMC looks for in a trainer. The Trainer of the Month recipient is chosen based on their safety record and the safety performance of their trainees, the number of drivers trained and the retention percentage of those drivers.
