Brake safety saves lives—and every August, the CVSA’s Brake Safety Week makes sure that commercial vehicles are meeting the highest standards of brake safety.
This week, inspectors across North America will be checking commercial vehicles as part of 2025’s Brake Safety Week, an enforcement initiative aimed at keeping our roads safe. Find out more about Brake Safety Week and how TMC prepares our drivers for inspections.
Understanding Brake Safety Week
During Brake Safety Week, certified inspectors will be out on the roads to conduct inspections on commercial vehicles, with an emphasis on brake systems. In some locations, inspectors may also use performance-based brake testers to judge vehicles’ braking performance.
This year’s area of focus is brake drums and rotors. These components can affect brake efficiency and may even cause injuries or damage to other vehicles if they become damaged and dislodge from a vehicle.
How TMC Prepares Drivers for Brake Safety Week
As part of last year’s Brake Safety Week, inspectors throughout North America performed more than 16,000 inspections. This year, we expect to see roughly the same number of inspections, and some TMC drivers will no doubt be among them.
Josh Perry, Senior Vice President of Safety, gave some tips for drivers to help prepare for Brake Safety Week:
- Make sure all your paperwork is in order. DOT inspectors may be focused on brake safety during this week, but brakes certainly won’t be the only thing they’re looking at during an inspection. Josh encourages all drivers to double-check that their logs, permits, and annual inspection stickers are up to date, in case they get stopped by an inspector.
- Do a thorough pre-trip inspection. Because DOT inspectors will be checking more than just brakes, Josh notes that drivers should be sure all parts of their equipment—even small things like marker lights—are working properly.
- Stop by a terminal if you notice any issues. Each of our terminals is staffed with expert maintenance technicians who keep our signature Peterbilt trucks running at their best. They can fix any issues that drivers notice, or even just check their brakes to make sure they’re in good shape.
- Call your safety manager if you have questions. We have a full team of safety managers who are always available to answer drivers’ questions or help them resolve issues on the road. Drivers can call any time if they’re unsure of something or need help.
Our Commitment to Safety
At TMC, safety is a key part of how we do business. We’re proud to be part of an industry that takes safety seriously and protects both drivers and the public through initiatives like Brake Safety Week.
